The short answer
Use JPG for photos, PNG for images that need transparency or sharp text, and WebP when you want the smallest file and your platform supports it.
JPG
JPG is the best choice for photographs and realistic images. It compresses very well, so files stay small. Its weakness is that it does not support transparency, and repeated saving slowly reduces quality.
PNG
PNG keeps every detail exactly, supports transparent backgrounds, and is great for logos, screenshots, and images with text. The trade-off is larger file size compared to JPG.
WebP
WebP is a modern format that gives small files with good quality, and it supports transparency too. The only catch is that some older apps, forms, and portals still do not accept it.
Quick rule
- Photo for a website, form, or message → JPG
- Logo, icon, or screenshot with text → PNG
- Smallest file for a modern website → WebP
- A form rejects your file → convert it to the format the form asks for
